Carbon sequestration at Å resolution
Marine algae annually convert gigatons of carbon dioxide into special carbohydrates. Some of these are broken down in the ocean, converting the carbon back into CO2.
However, unknown factors appear to stabilize certain glycan structures, thereby helping to store carbon in the ocean. This process is called carbon sequestration and regulates atmospheric CO2 levels.
